Scripture Memory Team Week 11

Author: Lina Abujamra - 19 Comments

Our blog community is memorizing the Book of James together this year (or at least trying to!).

Twice a month, on the 1st and the 15th, we post the verses we are going to be working on .

It’s easy. You can even start today. Just write in the verses from James you’d like to work on in the comments section, then work on them for the next 2 weeks.

Psalm 119:11 “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

5.1 Come on, your rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.
2 your riches have rotten and your garment are moth-eaten.
3 your gold and silver will be corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and eat your flesh like fire.
4 behold, the wages ofthe laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reaches the ears of The Lord of hosts.
5 you have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the days of slaughter.
6 you have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.
7 be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of The Lord. See how farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receive early and late rains.
You also, be patient, establish your hearts, for the coming of the The Lord at hand.

      JAMES 2
20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts great things.

    James 4:13-17 (NLT)
13 Look here, you people who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog — it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”
16 Otherwise you will be boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.
17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

    10. Humble yourselves before The Lord, and he will lift you up.
    12. There is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you, who are you to judge your neighbor?

My brothers and sisters, you will face all kinds of trouble. When you do, think of it as pure joy. Your faith will be put to the test. You know that when that happens it will produce in you the strength to continue. The strength to keep going must be allowed to finish its work. Then you will be all you should be. You will have everything you need.

I had already memorized the entire book of James following a Precept Bible Study in the fall of 2011, but I stopped reviewing it and reciting it, and so “lost” it.

Thanks to this Challenge, I returned to it and was amazed at how quickly I was able to rememorize it. Instead of going verse by verse as I did the first time, I was able to recommit to memory whole chunks at a time. It’s back now, and I recite all 5 chapters every day, and I review the book at least once a week to be sure I still have it word-for-word perfect.

I don’t want to “lose it” again.

    James 3:10-18 ESV
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

James 2:11, “For he who said, ‘Do not commit adultery,’ also said, ‘Do not murder.’ If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.”

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us?” But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
