Last week I almost got married.

What I’m trying to say is that last week I was supposed to meet the man I was going to marry.

But then the couple who was trying to set us up for lunch with them had other plans and the whole thing got cancelled.

Including my wedding.

While you might be smirking right now, the truth is that it’s not that difficult for any normal human being to get derailed into a ridiculous line of thinking.

It’s easy to get caught up in a web of negative emotions and the land of “what if”s and “if only”.

And if I’ve learned anything in my 43 years on this earth, it’s that nothing will trip you up faster than Valentine’s week when it comes to getting emotionally derailed.

“If only I had worn a different outfit.”

“If only I had used kinder words.”

“If only I hadn’t mentioned my past.”

“If only I hadn’t ended the relationship so quickly.”

Before you know it, you’re living in a pit of regret, a place that will keep you stuck forever if you’ll let it.

But God wants more for us in our walk with Him. God wants us to live in His freedom and His rest in His love. And when it comes to the “what ifs” in our lives, nothing will encourage us more than the reality of God’s sovereignty. He is in control.

He. Is. In. Control.

Of everything. Always.

So here are 5 great verses about God’s sovereignty that you can rest your mind on if you’re tempted to take a walk down memory lane and dwell on what ifs:

#1 Psalm 115:3

“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.”

#2 Proverbs 16:9

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

#3 Genesis 50:20

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

#4 Romans 8:28

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

#5 Second Chronicles 20:6

“O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you.”

The most liberating truth to rest your mind on today is that no matter what you’ve done or who you regret, God is in control of every detail of your life always. He’s in charge of every detail of your life. He cares about you!
